Song of the Week: “Poor Old Horse” by Richard Dawson

by Douglas Cowie on 19 December 2014

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Poor Old Horse” by Richard Dawson:

Last Tuesday my colleague and friend Will asked me about Richard Dawson, who he thought I’d probably take an interest in, but of whom I’d not heard anything.  He told me a bit about him, including favorable comparisons to Captain Beefheart.  The next day, Will sent me this video of Richard Dawson singing “Poor Old Horse.” Will was right: I took an interest.

Sometimes the stars align. On Friday I went to the second night of The Ex’s residency at Cafe Oto in London. It was an outstanding night of music, and featured, among the performers, Richard Dawson. It was exciting to see someone live who I’d only begun to learn about a couple of days earlier. He played guitar for one song, but the rest he performed a cappella. He’s equally engaging in both modes. I now own his record, Nothing Important, which I can recommend to you.
