Song of the Week: “Teenage Wasteland” by Wussy

by Douglas Cowie on 26 December 2014

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Teenage Wasteland” by Wussy:

Last week I was idly scrolling through my Twitter timeline when I happened on a couple of things that had been retweeted by someone I follow.  A band called Wussy was describing the radio interference they’d received through their amps. There was something compelling in the description, so I decided to check out the band.

Now I wonder why the hell it’s taken me until now to find out about this band.

Wussy has been around since 2001 and has put out five albums. While the band might not be the most famous outfit in the world, it’s not like they’re totally unknown. Robert Christgau has written about them. So have plenty of other people.  They’ve toured in the US and the UK.  Where the hell have I been?

I listened through their album Left for Dead via the band’s website.  Before I’d finished listening to it, I’d already ordered a copy. I will be buying Wussy’s other records as well. I will be keeping my damn eyes open and when Wussy comes to play in the UK again, I will go listen to the band live.

From the first listen you can just tell this is a band that will become your life.
