Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This week’s song is “Bad Girl” by New Bomb Turks:
A few weeks ago a friend emailed me and asked, “When was the last time you listened to the New Bomb Turks?” The friend in question also said that their cover of the New York Dolls’ “Bad Girl” was cracking him up, and it’s not hard to see why: this is pure, messy punk rock joy. It turns the awesome swaggery-blues punk of the original into awesome straight-up sneery speed punk, Ramones-style. Especially during the guitar solo it sounds like it might fall to pieces, and on top of that you get the ridiculous pronunciation of “trying” in the chorus: “Bad girl, what you traaayyn to do?”And what about that ending? “Bad! Bad! … Bad! …Buaaah! Girl! Aw!” New Bomb Turks somehow succeed in taking a great song by a great band, and making it their own without really changing it much at all, but without sounding like slavish imitators, either. Woo-hoo!
Here’s a live performance of the song by the New York Dolls:
