Song of the Week: “Baby’s Got a Temper” by The Prodigy

by Douglas Cowie on 8 March 2019

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Baby’s Got a Temper” by The Prodigy:

I traveled to London in 1997 for a semester abroad as part of my undergraduate study. The Prodigy was everywhere, and they were nothing like anything I’d heard or knew. Billboards advertised “Firestarter” and “Smack My B**** Up” around the city. The songs were on the radio. The band looked and sounded thrilling and frightening in equal balance. My friends and I had a hard time believing that’s really what he was saying. They felt like a door into a foreign city, through which I could walk and know that the world was different than I thought it was.

I wasn’t then and am not now a huge fan of The Prodigy, but I’ve always liked them for opening my ears and mind to something completely different to myself, and different from anything else, too.

RIP Keith Flint
