Song of the Week: “Cactus” by The Fish Police

by Douglas Cowie on 30 March 2018

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Cactus” by The Fish Police:

I went to see The Fish Police  at the Sebright Arms a few weeks ago, the night before they flew to Texas to launch Edge Myself to the Middle E.P. at South by Southwest. They’re a super fun live band who put on a dance party. Apart from the music, I like the lyrics and vocal delivery in these songs. “Cactus” stands out to me as somebody who’s got a house festooned with cacti, though they also have songs about cocoa butter, chicken, helicopters, and various other subjects you might run into in your daily life. You can go buy their music on Bandcamp, but you should really go check them out live, too.  Those deadpan lyrics are delivered with real swagger from the stage.
