Song of the Week: “Jim Dean of Indiana” by Phil Ochs

by Douglas Cowie on 16 March 2018

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Jim Dean of Indiana” by Phil Ochs:

I’ve been rereading the short stories of Breece D’J Pancake this week. According to James Allen McPherson, a writer and friend of Pancake’s,  Phil Ochs was Pancake’s favorite musician/songwriter,  and “Jim Dean of Indiana” was his favorite song, or a particular favorite, anyway. If you read the stories and listen to the song, it’s both easy and rewarding to hear and think about the connections between Ochs’ song and Pancake’s fiction.
