Song of the Week: “Caravan” by Art Blakey and His Jazz Messengers

by Douglas Cowie on 1 December 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Caravan” by Art Blakey and His Jazz Messengers:

On the last Monday of every month, a restaurant in my neighborhood hosts a live jazz night. Most months I go. The group that plays is usually the same bass player and drummer, with a varying cast of other musicians they know. It’s always really, really good.  The restaurant serves Punjabi food, so you basically get to eat delicious curry and listen to excellent musicians playing a mix of their own songs and jazz standards.  The owner of the restaurant is a big jazz fan, and he particularly likes “Caravan” so most months, the band finishes the evening with this Duke Ellington classic, here performed by a pretty heavyweight lineup anchored by the amazing Art Blakey.
