Song of the Week: “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow” by Nice and Smooth

by Douglas Cowie on 10 November 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow” by Nice and Smooth:

I’m a real sucker for a hip hop song with a simple sample, in this case the main riff from “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. Here it gets coupled with an equally simple “Amen Brother” breakbeat sample and together riff and beat bounce the song along. I also love the way Nice and Smooth work the words in this song. People ought to play this one more often.
