Song of the Week: “É Necessário” by Tim Maia

by Douglas Cowie on 20 October 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “É Necessário” by Tim Maia:

My friend Felipe shared this song in a group chat last week. I’d never heard of or listened to Tim Maia before, but anyway, this is from his 1977 self-titled album (not to be confused with his 1970 self-titled album, or the 1971 self-titled album, or the 1972 self-titled album, or the self-titled albums of 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1985, or 1986, not to mention any of the albums that weren’t self-titled), which I’m listening to as I write. According to the official website, Tim Maia was known as “The Supervisor” of Brazil. The 1977 Tim Maia is a half-hour series of short funk-soul-samba bursts, and it suggests that Tim Maia is more than a mere supervisor of the scene.
