Song of the Week: “Freedom Is Free” by Chicano Batman

by Douglas Cowie on 6 October 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Freedom Is Free” by Chicano Batman:

I only discovered Chicano Batman last week, when I read this interview by Greg Kot in the Chicago Tribune. I listened to a couple of songs earlier this week and then bought their new album, Freedom Is Free. Maybe you should, too. Chicano Batman juggle styles as though it’s no big deal, and you just know when a band does something that smart as though it’s no big deal that they’ve put a lot of work into having their good time, and making yours. On the other hand, as a close listen and a read of that interview will tell you, this isn’t just party music; Chicano Batman have something to say, and they want you to think while you’re listening, while you’re dancing, while you’re having a good time.
