Song of the Week: “I Won’t Slip Up” by The Delines

by Douglas Cowie on 4 August 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “I Won’t Slip Up” by The Delines:

Willy Vlautin, the songwriter and guitar player of the Delines, and also songwriter, singer and guitar player in the much-missed Richmond Fontaine, is among my very favorite songwriters, as you’ll discover if you follow the link I embedded in the middle of this sentence. I always forget that this song is called “I Won’t Slip Up” because in my head it’s “Hey, Ray.”  Anyway, it’s a perfect example of what I like about Willy Vlautin’s songwriting: the fragile story of the lyrics, about someone trying to do right but knowing they can’t quite help it when they don’t, and the beautiful melody.  Amy Boone’s voice really makes this song–and the Delines’ music in general–too.
