Song of the Week: “The Outdoor Type” by Smudge

by Douglas Cowie on 28 July 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “The Outdoor Type” by Smudge:

I don’t really know much–or anything of consequence, actually–about 1990s Australian band Smudge, though I might’ve owned an EP by them, unless I’m confusing them with another band that bore some kind of relation to Evan Dando and The Lemonheads.  Anyway, you can read about them on a well-known information site.  “The Outdoor Type” was made more well-known by The Lemonheads.

The real reason I’m posting this song is because my friends Anna and Andy are getting married today, and she really likes this song (or The Lemonheads’ version, at any rate). Andy is pretty good at steering a canoe, but I’m not sure whether camping is his bag, in case you’re keeping score at home.
