Song of the Week: “Nineteenth Century Love Song” by Mr Potatohead

by Douglas Cowie on 21 April 2017

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Nineteenth Century Love Song” by Mr Potatohead:

A couple summers ago, Probably Your Teacher did a short tour of Germany, Holland and England with our friends Mr Potatohead. The Dutch pop-punkers couldn’t get our song, “19th Century Love Song” out of their heads, so at the final gig in London they played a version of it themselves. They’ve since recorded their own version of the song, more or less just for the hell of it. It’s brighter, poppier, and more competently played than the original, which you can listen to here.  Mr Potatohead also cut the verses down to a neat four-line structure, which has the bonus of making a pretty nonsensical song even more nonsensicaler. She’s got a pretty instep!
