Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.
This is “So Long Souvenir” by Joshua Carpenter:
Joshua Carpenter’s new album is Prey Tells. I reviewed his previous album, Full Flight, on this very website a few years back. I feel no less enthusiasm for Prey Tells than I did for Full Flight. If anything, I feel more enthusiasm for this new album. To say that Joshua Carpenter makes really nice countryish pop music, and writes really nice countryish pop songs is both somehow accurate and underselling things at the same time. There’s a washed-out quality to the songs that sounds relaxed without being lazy, and a general songwriting sensibility that leans towards Alex Chilton, though here I have to note that my review of Full Flightthis here link goes on and on about George Harrison. Whatever. I’ve been listening to this album pretty regularly for a couple of months now, and I’m just as excited about it as I was when it arrived in my mailbox, so maybe you should go visit and drop ten dollars yourself.
