Song of the Week: “The Marching Saints” by Harry Belafonte

by Douglas Cowie on 11 November 2016

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “The Marching Saints” by Harry Belafonte:

Harry Belafonte is a beautiful singer and a lifelong champion of and activist for civil rights.  On Monday he wrote an article in the New York Times articulating the stakes of the Presidential Election through his own experiences and the poetry of Langston Hughes.  In difficult times it behooves every person to turn to those artists whose work, lives, and words engage the heart of darkness beating its bad blood through our nation, in order to see the light that shines towards the better heart that still pulses, so that we may beat our own hearts in unison.
