Song of the Week: “Respect” by Aretha Franklin

by Douglas Cowie on 11 March 2016

Each Friday I pick a song–new, old, borrowed, blue–that’s been on my mind and in my ears, and write a short post about it.

This is “Respect” by Aretha Franklin:

Tuesday was International Women’s Day. Aretha Franklin so thoroughly makes this song her own that it’s easy to forget entirely that it was written and first recorded by the unbelievably great Otis Redding. It’s also worth noting that Aretha Franklin owns the best scene in The Blues Brothers.
